FAQ

Questions before your mission

You don’t need to know Krakow, book a time slot or rush. But if you’d like to know everything in advance, you’re in the right place.

About the game

It’s not just a walk, and it’s not classic sightseeing either.

EscapeCity is a city game in an app: you solve puzzles, uncover local stories and get to know the city step by step. Each mission takes you to places that many people walk past every day without noticing their secrets.

You set the pace. The narrator guides you through the adventure, and the city becomes your game board.

This adventure is for you if you:

Not at all.

You don’t need any knowledge of the city to have a great time. The app guides you along the route, and the narrator explains everything on the way. Instead of a history exam, you get an adventure full of discoveries and fascinating facts.

Absolutely.

Most players start without any preparation. You discover everything you need during the game. Chances are, by the end of the mission you’ll know a few stories to surprise your friends with.

Yes.

You can complete the mission solo, but it’s usually most fun with 2–6 people. Figuring things out together, small victories and those “got it!” moments work even better in a group.

Yes, especially for families with older children.

The puzzles call for observation, teamwork and logical thinking. The youngest players often spot clues faster than the adults, so everyone can find their own role in the adventure.

No.
EscapeCity was designed primarily for adults and older children. The humour is light and clever, and the puzzles are meant to give you the satisfaction of discovery – not feel like a school quiz.

Purchase and access

No.

After purchase, you have a full 365 days to activate your mission. You can play tomorrow, in a few months’ time, or give the adventure to someone as a gift.

Absolutely.

It’s a gift for people who prefer shared experiences to yet more things to dust. After purchase, the recipient has a full 365 days to start their mission, so they can pick the best moment for the adventure themselves.

Each mission has its own starting point, which you’ll see before the adventure begins. It’s listed in the mission description on gramiejskakrakow.pl and also shown on the map in the free EscapeCity app.

Once you get there, just open the app and start the mission. The narrator takes care of the rest, guiding you through the city step by step.

No.

You play whenever you feel like it. The app is available 24/7, so you can start your mission whenever suits you best.

If there are partner venues along the route, it’s worth checking their opening hours. If you find a door closed, the game still works and you’ll get the clues you need without any problem.

During the game

No.

It’s your mission, so you set the pace. You’re not racing against the clock or other players.

Most missions take about 2 hours.

But no stress – it’s not a race against time. You can pause the game for a coffee, lunch or a short rest and come back to it later. It’s your adventure, and you set the pace.

Of course.

Coffee, lunch, ice cream, a photo of a cat sitting on a wall or a spontaneous visit to a recommended café? Sounds like a good plan.

You can pause the game at any time and come back to it later.

Don’t worry.

The map in the app shows the route and your current location. The narrator guides you step by step, so getting lost would take a truly creative approach to the adventure.

No.

You walk the route at your own pace and can take as many breaks as you need. It’s not a sports competition. Although there’s a good chance you’ll clock up a few thousand steps without even noticing.

Yes.

Here, the city is the game board. You stroll through streets, squares and alleyways, uncovering clues exactly where the city’s history has hidden them.

That’s exactly why you won’t find the answers on Google. They’re waiting for you out on the streets.

Yes.

If you like cities that show a slightly different side after sunset, an evening mission can be a great idea. Just keep in mind that some partner venues along the route may already be closed by then. That won’t stop you from finishing the game (everything you need will be in a free hint), and you can use the discount or other partner offer later – the next day, for example.

If your four-legged friend enjoys city walks, they’ll probably make a great mission companion!

Most of the route runs through public spaces, so you can uncover the city’s secrets together. The only thing to keep in mind is the house rules of the individual partner venues along the route, which are currently pet-friendly. And of course, remember your good manners – like cleaning up after your dog.

Puzzles and difficulty

The puzzles are meant to be satisfying, not frustrating.

You don’t need to be an escape room fan or a puzzle master. All it takes is curiosity, a little observation and a willingness to explore the city.

You won’t get stuck for good.

Every mission has a hint system that helps you get back on the right track. Sometimes a small nudge is all it takes to feel like a detective cracking the final mystery. You can also skip a task, but you won’t get any points for it. And once you skip a puzzle, you can’t go back to it.

App and technology

Yes.

The app works on both iOS and Android devices.

You’ll need internet access to start the game and download the materials. You can use free Wi-Fi, for example at your hotel, or the city’s public hotspots (the current list is published by the City of Krakow: https://www.krakow.pl/196800,artykul,miejskie_hot_spoty_-_darmowe_wi-fi.html).

Once the mission has started, you only need GPS – you can keep your internet switched off. You’ll see the game finale (video) and your updated leaderboard position once you’re back online.

GPS helps the app recognise when you reach each point of the mission, and the map guides you along the route.

No need to study paper maps or wonder where to turn. Just focus on exploring the city and solving puzzles.

Most features work both online and offline. Just download the game content – on your hotel Wi-Fi, for example – and you can head out into the city even in airplane mode. You’ll need the internet again once the game is over: updating the leaderboard, for instance, requires a connection. You can watch the final video back at your hotel or while still in town, using one of the free hotspots. Before you set off, make sure your phone is charged. Missions can be more gripping than the next episode on Netflix.

The list is surprisingly short:

  • a charged phone,
  • comfortable shoes,
  • water for you – and for your dog, if they’re coming along 🙂
  • a bit of curiosity,
  • a team to play with (optional, but recommended).

The city will provide the rest – along with a few well-hidden secrets waiting to be discovered.

Why EscapeCity?

We don’t make quizzes about the city.

We create adventures that only work in one specific place.

The answer might be hidden in a detail on a townhouse, on a mural, by a monument or a few steps off the main trail. That way, you don’t just get to know the city – you truly step into its story.

Because here, you’re not a spectator.

You’re the hero of the story.

Instead of listening to long lectures, you solve puzzles. Instead of chasing after a guide, you choose your own pace. Instead of ticking off points on a map, you discover places that stay with you much longer.

We’re not promising this game will change your life.

But there’s a good chance that you’ll:

  • discover places you’d never noticed before,
  • hear stories you won’t find in most guidebooks,
  • spend quality time with your loved ones,
  • walk more steps than you planned,
  • go home with a story worth telling.

Not a bad result for one afternoon.

Frequently asked questions about things to do in Krakow

If you’ve already seen the Main Square, Wawel and the city’s most popular sights, try looking at Krakow like the hero of a city game.

Instead of ticking places off a list, you solve puzzles, uncover local stories and end up where most tourists never go. Plus all those bonuses to grab along the way… 🙂

You’ve done escape rooms. And the cinema.

A city game is a date with a shared mission. A bit of exploring, a bit of laughter, a dozen or so puzzles and plenty to talk about along the way. No awkward silences and no sitting at the same table all evening.

EscapeCity combines a walk, fun and exploring the city in one adventure.

Kids hunt for clues, adults try to crack the puzzles, and everyone shares the same goal. That’s why we often hear that the hardest part wasn’t solving the puzzle – it was to stop talking about it after the mission ended.
